Current Project

I wrote this blog post why I made this project public, just in case you are wondering.

I'm writing a romance novella, the expected word count is around thirty thousand. The working title is 'Bodyguard'.

The story is about a young woman, who after breaking up with her African boyfriend finds herself hesitating between two men. They are quite different, and in their own way they both want her to be a girlfriend. Soon the heroine finds out that danger lurks in the shadows of her father's life, who left her and her mother long time ago. She is still mad at him betraying her, and it doesn't improve their relationship that someone is after her because of the decisions her father made. But what the two men have to do with his father's case? As the story unfolds she has to decide if she can forget her father. She also has to choose which man she likes more, but her decision may not be the wisest one. It turns out that some people are not who she thinks they are, and she has to pay the price for that. Of course, by the end the bad guy pays for what he had done, and everybody else lives happily ever after. Almost.
I know. I still have to work on the description.

Here is the time-line what I did so far:

October 22
2760 words written, I'm working on chapter 4. I'm reading how-to books on writing romance to be able to write stronger romantic scenes.

October 15
I have written 1,700 words of the first draft.

October 8
I developed the main characters, and wrote some backstories for two of them.

October 2
I wrote the first and second chapters. They are short, and I already can see that I will need to put in more details. I'm the type who puts stuff in afterwards, not the one who cuts out later.

October 1
- The story is plotted. I'm sure it will change during writing the first draft, when the characters will come alive and claim their own life and make stupid mistakes. Also, I don't think it's flawless, so certainly I will need to change it here and there. But I think it's good enough to start with.
- I created the main characters, I haven't worked out every detail though. I leave some room for changes, and it's kinda discovery to unfold their personalities during the writing.
- I chose the place in general: Brussels, Belgium. It will help that I live there, and I will be able to visit places and get details right, which will make the story more believable.
